Accounts suggest that these vessels were filled with a mixture of petroleum and designed to be charged with incendiary material, probably a mixture containing naphtha, the basis of the legendary Greek Fire of the Byzantines and a wick which was lit before it was propelled on the enemy. They were mostly used in ship battles. Material : Terracotta Culture : Byzantine, c. 10th Century A.D. Condition : Intact An article published by W.
